We will one day have to explain our “culture” to our children. . .

and while we may be able to find the language to scrape together some semblance of an explanation, there is no excuse. Not by a long shot. Matthew Arnold notoriously used the term “culture” much in the same way that the foundational German concept of ‘bildung’ was used, for he defined it as “the best that has been thought and said in the world.”

We seem to be settling for very little here lately in our “culture,” setting the bar so very low that I wonder whether it should be labeled such at all. It is apropos that I read the following summary of our situation on Twitter, but I did: one Twitterer, in disgust, noted that “Jersey Shore will have more seasons than Arrested Development. Hope you’re proud of yourself, humanity.”

The question, of course, is what to do if you are among the disgusted (who could give a rat’s A-S-$ about G-T-L); whom would sooner get up off of the couch and see an exhibit or interact with others, perhaps even give of themselves to change the world than breed bacteria or worse in a hot tub? What do we do to change culture/society? Is it possible?
