Paulo Freire

Today was the birthday of Paulo Freire (September 19, 1921 – May 2, 1997). He was instrumental in changing the way that people thought about education, literacy, and the liberation of oppressed persons in the 20th century. Always on the side of the underdog, Freire notably said:

“Washing one’s hands of the conflict between the powerful and the powerless means to side with the powerful, not to be neutral.”

I sometimes need that reminder. Do you?
